Why does LA legal transcription split into two different jobs?

Most cities have one kind of legal transcription demand. Los Angeles has two, and they want opposite things.

Entertainment, IP and right of publicity work is confidentiality-first. Talent disputes, studio and production matters, profit participation claims and guild arbitrations generate long recorded interviews and hearing sessions where the material itself is the risk. Names that have not been made public, deal terms under NDA, settlement discussions that will never be filed. For this work, who touches the file matters more than how fast it comes back. We sign NDAs before any transfer, restrict access to named reviewers on request, and delete on an agreed schedule. A firm handling a studio matter would rather wait an extra day than widen the circle.

Personal injury, auto and wage-and-hour work is volume-first. A PI practice in Los Angeles may send hundreds of recorded statements and deposition files across a year, and what matters is that transcript number three hundred is formatted identically to transcript number one, that names and claim numbers are right every time, and that nothing sits in a queue. Here speed and consistency are the whole product.

We run both. The difference is in the handling, not the quality — and telling us which kind of matter you are sending at the quote stage is the single most useful thing you can do.

Which Los Angeles courts and proceedings do we work from?

Federal. The U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, sitting at the First Street Courthouse and the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles. Also the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California, which publishes an approved transcription service provider list — if your matter requires a transcriber from that list, raise it when you request a quote and we will tell you straight away whether we can help.

State. Los Angeles County Superior Court, the largest trial court system in the United States, including the Stanley Mosk Courthouse and Spring Street Courthouse downtown and the outlying branches at Santa Monica, Van Nuys, Pomona and Long Beach.

Appellate. Material assembled for review by the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District.

Agencies and tribunals. Recorded proceedings from the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board district offices across LA, the California Civil Rights Department, the LA County Civil Service Commission, and entertainment guild arbitrations.

Scope. We transcribe existing audio and video recordings. We do not provide stenographers, court reporters or live capture at proceedings, and we have no office in Los Angeles — all work is delivered remotely.

How does a thirty-day errata window work across a county this size?

The rule is the same one that applies statewide. The problem in Los Angeles is not the rule, it is the map.

Under CCP 2025.520 the deponent has thirty days from the deposition officer’s notice to review the transcript, change the form or substance of an answer, and approve it — either by signing at the officer’s office or by signed letter sent certified mail with return receipt, copies to all parties.

Now put that on LA County. A deposition taken in Van Nuys. Counsel in Century City. The witness lives in Long Beach and works in Pomona. The officer’s office is downtown. Those points are forty miles apart in a county where forty miles can be a two-hour drive at the wrong time of day, and every approval route in the statute requires either a physical signing or a round trip through certified mail.

Thirty days does not stretch. The only part of that sequence anyone controls is the beginning — how long it takes to get a written transcript into the attorney’s hands after the recording is made. Overnight delivery at no surcharge moves the start of the clock forward by days, and page and line numbering means a witness in Long Beach can mark a change against line 14 of page 212 instead of describing a passage over the phone.

Procedural requirements change. Verify current requirements with the court before relying on any deadline described here. This is general information, not legal advice.

What do we transcribe for Los Angeles legal teams?

Who do we work with in Los Angeles?

Requests for legal transcription in Los Angeles reach us from across the basin — Century City, downtown, Santa Monica, Woodland Hills, Pasadena and Long Beach — and from in-house legal departments handling LA matters from elsewhere.

Formatting, certification and security

Transcripts are delivered with speaker attribution, page and line numbering, Q&A formatting for depositions, timestamps to your specification, exhibit indexing, and crosstalk or inaudible passages flagged with timestamps rather than guessed at. Verbatim or clean verbatim, your choice per matter. Every transcript carries our certificate of accuracy.

On security — which for a good share of LA work is the deciding factor rather than a footnote: NDAs signed on request before any transfer, encrypted upload, access limited to assigned transcriptionists and reviewers with named-reviewer restriction available, HIPAA and GDPR compliant handling, and defined retention and deletion. No third-party automated transcription services touch your material at any point.

How it works

  1. Upload the audio or video. Encrypted browser upload. Minutes.
  2. Tell us which kind of matter it is — confidentiality-driven or volume-driven — and we confirm scope, price, turnaround and any handling restrictions in writing.
  3. A human transcriptionist prepares the draft, assigned by subject matter so LA entertainment and legal terminology goes to transcriptionists who know it.
  4. Multi-level quality review — a second pass against the original audio, checking names, claim numbers, citations and speaker attribution.
  5. Delivery overnight at no additional charge, typically before your next business morning.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have an office in Los Angeles? No. We work with LA firms remotely through encrypted upload and delivery, which means no travel cost, no appearance fees and no scheduling around anyone’s availability. Turnaround and pricing are the same whether your office is in Century City or Long Beach.

How much does legal transcription cost in Los Angeles? Pricing starts at $0.95 per audio minute, adjusted for audio quality, number of speakers, complexity and turnaround. Legal work can be billed per page or per line if that suits your matter accounting. Every quote is confirmed in writing before work begins.

Can you sign an NDA before I send entertainment material? Yes, and for that kind of work we would expect to. NDAs are signed before any transfer, access can be restricted to named reviewers on request, and files are deleted on an agreed schedule. Nothing is routed through third-party automated transcription tools at any stage.

How fast can I get an LA deposition transcript back? Overnight turnaround is available at no additional charge. Because our production day starts three hours ahead of Pacific time, a recording uploaded at the end of your business day is typically transcribed, reviewed and delivered before you start the following morning.

Do you handle high-volume PI and recorded statement work? Yes. Volume work is a large share of what we do for Los Angeles firms, and consistency is the point — the same formatting, speaker labelling and file naming across every transcript in a matter, however many there are. Tell us your template at the outset.

Do you work with LA County Superior Court matters at the branch courthouses? Yes. We work from recordings supplied by the firm rather than attending proceedings, so it makes no difference whether the matter sits at Stanley Mosk, Spring Street, Santa Monica, Van Nuys, Pomona or Long Beach. Turnaround and price are unaffected.

Is legal transcription the same as court reporting? No. A court reporter captures testimony live at a proceeding and certifies that record as the officer present. Legal transcription converts an existing recording into a written transcript afterward. American Transcription Services provides transcription only — we do not supply reporters or stenographers.

What if my matter requires a court-approved transcriber? The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California publishes an approved transcription service provider list. If your matter requires a transcriber from it, tell us when you request a quote and we will give you a straight answer on whether we can take the work.
